How to Turn Bar Soap into Liquid Soap

I found this recipe on Pinterest and had to try it.  Between my mother’s attempts to sneak her gifted bar soaps into my bathroom, and my own collection of travel sized bar soaps, I have plenty of converting to do.  And this recipe, which I found from Savvy Housekeeping (via Pinterest), is super simple and inexpensive.  In fact, the hardest part is finding the glycerin.

Tip 1.  Savvy Housekeeping recommends finding glycerin in the drug store.  I did a combing through our CVS looking for glycerin and finally decided to ask a young guy who was unpacking boxes.  He impatiently paraded me through the store, pointed at a shelf and left me staring at a box of glycerin suppositories.  So my recommendation is to bypass the drug store and head to your local health food store.  I had much better luck there.

Tip 2.  Gather all the bottles and soap dispensers you have available.  This recipe makes ALOT of liquid soap.

Tip 3.  You’ll need some kitchen tools – a large pot, a cheese grater, a measuring cup and tablespoon, a spoon or whisk, and a funnel.  Probably better not to use the same tools you’d use for food, but since many a misbehaved child has had their mouths washed out with soap, using your regular tools shouldn’t be harmful.  Just throw them in the dishwasher afterward to make sure they’re well cleaned and sanitized.

Bar to Liquid Soap

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp glycerin
• 10 cups water
• 1 cup grated bar soap

Instructions

• Combine the three ingredients into a large pot on medium heat.
• Stir until the soap melts and dissolves.

The soap will be like soup, even after it cools for awhile.  Use the funnel to ladle the soap into the containers while it is cool and still soupy, it’s much more difficult to transfer thick soap into the containers.  I let it set overnight and it wasn’t until morning that it had thickened.

A fun experiment, its a great way to use up those remnants of bar soap lying around the house.  Not to mention, you’ll be well supplied for quite some time, and you’ll save a few pennies in the process.  Enjoy!
